The above information is from the label provided in the church. However, what is being given and received in the image is not alms but a book. I have not been able to find the corresponding story in my usual sources. Perhaps it is a matter of a purely local legend.

Even the identity of the artist is a mystery. The label says he is either Dalmasio or "Pseudo-Dalmasio" di Iacopo Scannabecchi.
